As part of their training facility development, KC Current created a dedicated space for the KC Current II youth academy and other local youth teams, including locker rooms, a film room, and recovery areas. I was tasked with designing the exterior using the club’s branding. The final design would be painted by a local muralist using a projector.
My design needed to match precisely on all sides of the building in order to translate effectively. However, exterior staircases and fencing would obscure parts of the design from certain angles. As a result, some areas of the building had few to no elements in order to maximize efficiency. During the onset of the project, construction had not yet begun and there was no physical reference to work from. With the help of the architecture firm, I used pre-existing renderings to mock the flat designs onto a 3-D space.
Youth Academy Building
Process
The academy building’s design was to be fun and energetic, while staying rooted in the team’s brand identity. Each side would flow into another by connecting patterns and elements (such as the team crest) along each wall. During the process, I had to understand how my design choices would be interpreted by the muralist. This project was an excellent exercise in translating digital designs into physical media.
