The first season of HBO’s True Detective inspired me through its exceptional writing, atmosphere, and direction. I believe the opening sequence perfectly distills the show’s entire mood in under two minutes. Its ethereal, surreal imagery paired with an unforgettable song choice lulls viewers into a trance-like state, blurring the lines between dream and reality.
This project reimagines an intro for a hypothetical fifth season. Two detectives investigate a series of bizarre disappearances across national parks in the American Southwest. As their investigation deepens, they uncover a world that defies explanation—one steeped in mysticism, death, and the paranormal.

Process
My first step was selecting a song that could capture the mystery of an arid desert: the sensation of a dry, cool wind sweeping across an empty highway. “Mother of Earth” by The Gun Club fit perfectly, with its twangy guitars and haunting, melodic vocals.
I edited the track down to approximately 90 seconds in Audacity. Starting with the audio allowed me to establish pacing early, which then guided the development of the visuals.
All assets were created in Photoshop and imported into After Effects, where I handled animation, compositing, and effects. Double-exposure techniques frame key locations and plot points within the silhouettes of the characters—an effect prominently featured in the original series. Many sequences leverage the 3D camera to create complex movement and realistic depth of field.
The biggest challenge was sourcing assets that aligned with the storyboards. I combined free and paid stock footage, stills, and AI-generated video elements. This process reinforced the importance of remaining flexible while staying true to the core creative vision.
